CARDIFF CITY 3 BRENTFORD 1

Brentford fielded an unchanged side from Saturday and began brightly and Evans went close with a free kick after Hunt was brought down in the penalty area. Cardiff City first shot of note was on six minutes, Jason Bowen beating three players but shot straight at Oli Gott. Fifteen minutes in however, Cardiff took the lead. Sidwell's stray pass picked up by Bowen, his crossfield pass looked suspiciously offside. The Brentford players appealed for offside to no avail, Thorne cracking the ball home.

On 21 minutes, Graham Kavanagh committed a crude challenge on Steve hunt and was rightly booked. Fifteen minutes later The Bluebirds doubled the lead. Robert Earnshaw disposed Michael Dobson and from 25 yards out stroked home a fabulous goal, which Oli Gott could only watch as it hit the net.

It looked as if the floodgates were about to open. Cardiff wingerJason Bowen's shot was superbly saved by Oli. The Icelandic keeper palmed the ball away with four minutes to half time. The Bees survived the onslaught and went in to the break two down.

HALF-TIME: CARDIFF CITY 2 BRENTFORD 0

Twenty seconds into the half, Steve Sidwell went close, flashing the ball past the left hand post. Seven minutes after the break, Jason Bowen tried a cheeky chip, but Oli tipped the ball over the bar. Steve Coppell took a gamble, Mark McCammon and Kevin O'Connor replaced Ben Burgess and Owusu on 66 minutes. From a free kick given for a foul on Micheal Dobson, Paul Evans struck home from the edge of the area on 69 minutes after the ball seemed to be cleared by Cardiff to give Brentford hope.

On 72 minutes, Eddie Hutchinson entered the fray, replacing Steve Hunt as Brentford reverted to 4-3-3. And just as if The Bees were looking to get back into the game, from a scrambled ruck of players, Daniel Gabbidon poked the ball home to restore the two goal advantage with fifteen minutes left.

On 79 minutes, a chip from Gabbidon went wide with Oli advancing. With seven minutes left The Bluebirds were awarded a penalty for a foul on Earnshaw by Paul Gibbs. The Bees left back was dully sent off but Earnshaw cracked it against the bar and Evans cleared to safety.
