Brentford's hopes of completing the double over Swindon Town were dashed as The Bees lost 2-1 at The County Ground.
19 year-old goalkeeper Alan Julian made his League bow, as Paul Smith was unavailable due to illness. As most fans were settling down to watch the afternoon's proceedings, Swindon opened the scoring after just seventy seconds.
Town centre-back Andy Gurney fired the home side ahead, as slack Bees marking allowed the skipper to tap home from a yard out. It was a shock to the system from which The Bees did not easily recover, penned back in their own half for most of the opening forty-five minutes.
With ten minutes gone, Brentford had strong appeals for a penalty turned down, as Stephen Hunt appeared to be felled in the area. However, Referee Parkes ignored this and went on to make of a series of strange decisions all afternoon against both teams.
Brentford were reduced to ten men six minutes after the break, as Jamie Fullarton earned himself a red card for a two-footed challenge on Luke Nightingale, his second of the campaign. Stephen Evans moved in the centre of midfield to plug the gap.
Swindon doubled their lead with twenty-five minutes remaining. Substitute Eric Sabin forced a corner. From the set-piece, Brentford failed to clear, and striker Sam Parkin stabbed the ball home from close range.
It appeared most would be writing Brentford's obituary at this point, but Wally Downes made what was proved to be a masterstroke substitution, striker Mark McCammon replacing Scot Marshall with fifteen minutes to go. His first task was to whip the ball in from the left-hand side to Stephen Hunt. The Irishman eventually found Rowan Vine, and the 20 year-old made no mistake from just inside the penalty area.
Try as they might, Brentford could not force the equaliser, even Bees' goalkeeper Alan Julian joining the attack deep into added on time.
Swindon held firm, and took all three points in a game that Brentford probably deserved none.
