High-flying Barnsley crashed to their first defeat in nine games to a Brentford side that ran out worthy winners. The Bees led the corner count at half-time, but Barnsley will rue the countless chances they had in the first period to forge a lead.
Kevin Betsy and Steve Hayward were both guilty of missing clear-cut opportunities for The Tykes, Hayward hitting the bar in the 28th minute, and Sonko cleared off the line ten minutes later.
Barnsley failed to recover from going a goal down within ninety seconds of the re-start. Matt Harrold's header looked innocent enough, but Eddie Hutchinson was the first to react, stooping low to head the ball past Ilic.
Thirteen minutes later Brentford increased their lead. Jay Tabb sped down the left wing to find Tony Rougier. The 32-year-old striker picked out his spot perfectly to give Ilic no chance.
Too add to Barnsley's woes, Lee Crooks was stretchered off in a challenge with Bees' midfielder Kevin O'Connor
. Substitute Rory Fallen scored a consolation for The Tykes a minute from time but it was too little, too late.
