An end-to-end seaside thriller finished with honours even as Brentford fought back from two goals down to gain a point. The entertainment value was five stars, played in a blustery wind but both sides played attractive football despite the conditions. Brentford fielded an unchanged line-up, with Deon Burton and Jay Tabb taking their place on the bench after returning from international duty in the week.
There were numerous chances throughout the match, with the pendulum swinging rapidly between the two teams as to who would claim all three points. Brentford dominated the first twenty-five minutes with the win behind them, and should have led, but it was Torquay that took first blood in the 38th minute, Stuart Wardley heading past Nelson from a Martin Phillips free-kick. The home side doubled their advantage three minutes after the break. Wardley again put his name on the scoresheet with another header.
Changes were made immediately, Jay Tabb and Deon Burton replacing Frampton and O'Connor. This left gaps at the back and Torquay should have added a third in the 66th minute when Jo Kuffour intercepted Salako's intended pass to Scott Fitzgerald. The Gulls striker put the ball wide with just Nelson to beat.
Brentford reduced the deficit in the 69th minute when Chris Hargreaves latched onto John Salako's cross to fire home from six yards out - a just reward for his performance. It was the home side's turn to buckle, as after constant pressure, The Bees equalised eight minutes later. Sam Sodje heading home at the far post after Michael Turner flicked on John Salako's cross.
This wasn't the end of the home side's fight, as they spurned an opportunity to add a third. Martin Gritton advanced with Stuart Nelson to beat, but Michael Turner cleared his shot off the line. Tabb and Burton had opportunities to give Brentford all three points, but in the end they had to settle for one.
