A hat-trick from former Brentford striker Leon Constantine gave Torquay three points at Griffin Park
on Boxing Day. Brentford led at half time but couldn't take the win.
Brentford made a solitary change from the team that defeated Colchester before Christmas. Chris Hargreaves was replaced by Jamie Lawrence, with Jay Tabb returning to the substitute's bench.
The game started very slowly, neither team able to stamp their authority on it. Stewart Talbot in the Brentford midfield was industrious, Deon Burton drilled a shot wide and John Salako curled a free kick just past the post in the first twenty minutes but Torquay defended solidly and Brentford couldn't break through. Torquay best effort was a Tony Bedeau header which drifted wide.
Brentford did eventually make their possession tell in the 26th minute, Sam Sodje getting the goal. A free kick from skipper Talbot found Sodje unmarked six yards out, he got the faintest touch which helped the ball past former Brentford goalkeeper Oli Gottskalksson. The remainder of the half saw Brentford pushing forward looking for a second goal. Alex Rhodes had a couple of long range efforts that were off target, and Talbot had a shot deflected wide after a quick incisive breakaway involving, Rhodes, Salako and Steve Claridge.
Torquay came out in the second half and took the game to their hosts. Leon Constantine had a goal disallowed for pushing at a corner in the 51st minute but they didn't have much longer to wait for their goal. Bedeau won Torquay a free kick, about twenty five yards from goal and Constantine curled the ball past Nelson into the bottom right hand corner.
The visitors, not content with a point, took the lead in the 70th minute. Constantine attempted to play Bedeau in behind the Bees defence, the ball cannoned off a defender and back into Constantine's path. He flicked the ball over Stuart Nelson and into the bottom corner.
The visitors third came on the break in the 83rd minute. Lee Canoville found Bedeau and his cross was smashed home by Constantine. Brentford pushed forward, Michael Turner came close after a defenders clearance hit him on the back but Brentford were beaten.
