Brentford were left to rue missed chances as Notts County left Griffin Park with a point after a goalless draw on a chilly evening.
The Bees had the better of the game and certainly created the better openings but could not break down a stubborn County rearguard.
The visitors showed ambition in the first period, looking just as likely to get the killer goal, but after the break Brentford dominated and forced goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington into a few important saves.
The first chances fell to the visitors but efforts from Richard Butcher and Stephen Hunt failed to trouble Ben Hamer unduly but at the other end Pilkington was having plenty to do.
He saved well from a low Gary Smith shot, was fortunate when a deflected Ross Montague shot looped straight to him and was well position to catch an Alan Connell effort from a tight angle soon after.
Hamer saved from Jason Lee at the other end and watched a Felix Bastians shot drift wide before producing a fine full stretch save to deny Ali Gibb when Brentford failed to clear a corner.
Brentford ended the first half in the ascendency; Glenn Poole fired over and screwed another shot wide before Pilkington saved well from a low Connell effort.
But the hosts were nearly undone just before the break when a free kick was harshly given for a back pass by Connell and Hunt's free kick was deflected wide by the massed ranks of Brentford defenders.
Connell had a shot blocked late in the first half and the Bees' hit man should have opened the scoring soon after the break.
Ryan Dickson's free kick was headed back to Kevin O'Connor but Connell fired straight at Pilkington who reacted well to save.
But the County stopper almost ruined his good work soon after when he dropped a Poole cross at the feet of Connell but the ball couldn't be forced home by the clever striker or Montague, who swivelled and lashed a shot inches past the post.
Brentford did manage to beat Pilkington when Montague bundled the ball past him after picking up an O'Connor cut back but Adam Tann cleared the ball as it was heading towards the net.
County could have snatched the win when Gibb curled a shot wide and Mike Edwards headed over late on but a game lacking real spark ended without a mark on the score sheet.
