A Lee Thorpe goal was not enough to give Brentford a home win as a fine headed equaliser from Graham Coughlan ensured Rotherham United took a point away from Griffin Park after a 1-1 draw.
In a game that was intriguing rather than exciting Thorpe struck the first goal ten minutes into the second half but the lead lasted only seven minutes as Coughlan's strike earned The Millers a share of the spoils.
The game ebbed and flowed throughout with both teams having spells of dominance but clear cut chances were few and far between.
There was only one effort of note in the first quarter of the game when United midfielder Marcus Bean was given too much space 25 yards from goal and drilled a shot narrowly wide but once the early cautiousness had worn off openings started to come, albeit without real regularity.
Charlie Ide lashed a shot wide from 15 yards after racing onto a nice Thorpe flick and the same player had an even better chance ten minutes before the break when the visitors failed to clear a corner, Matthew Heywood knocked it back in, Thorpe headed on and Ide headed wide from ten yards.
In between times Rotherham had chances of their own, Marc Newsham had a deflected shot cannon off a post when the home defence allowed him a run from halfway and Stephen Brogan missed the ball completely when he was in front of goal trying to make the most of a Bean pass.
The visitors came out after the break had probably had the better of the early openings, Simon Brown saved easily when Andy Todd miss-hit a shot and Newsham blasted wide when The Bees failed to clear a Danny Harrison corner, but it was Brentford who took the lead.
Ricky Shakes split the home defence wide open with a simple ball over the top and Thorpe raced onto it in the inside right channel and lashed home, across Andy Warrington.
The goal invigorated Brentford, Shakes had an effort deflected wide, Thorpe headed across the face of goal from a fine Grant Basey corner and Dale Tonge produced an important late clearance to prevent Glenn Poole reaching a Thorpe flick.
But once again the next goal came against the run of play as Rotherham's central defenders, who let Thorpe run clear for Brentford's goal, made amends.
Ian Sharps produced a fine cross from the right and Coughlan powered a header brilliantly over the diving Brown and into the corner from all of 14 yards.
Substitute Peter Holmes could have made things worse for The Bees when he fired wide from 30 yards and then shot straight at Brown after breaking from deep.
With time ticking by Brentford showed more purpose with Rotherham content to attack on the break, Shakes had an effort blocked and Alan Connell blasted wide while at the other end Brown saved superbly as Newsham raced through.
Brentford almost snatched it at the death when a wicked John Mousinho cross just eluded the onrushing forwards but The Bees had to settle for a point.
