A double from ex-Bee Jordan Rhodes helped give Huddersfield Town a convincing victory over Brentford at Griffin Park. A three-goal salvo in eight minutes put paid to any hopes of the home side ending Huddersfield's unbeaten league run stretching back to January.
The former loan striker scored two and made one as Town brushed aside the home side's challenge in front of Griffin Park's second largest crowd of the season.
Uwe Rösler made one change from last Saturday's win at Oldham Athletic; Karleigh Osborne replaced the suspended Miguel Llera in the heart of the Bees defence.
On a sweltering day, surely the hottest to be played in an October month in decades, Brentford encountered a side intent on extending their 35 match unbeaten league run.
After a quite opening period, Brentford a spell of extensive pressure mid-way through the half, the Bees defence weathering three corners in as many minutes. Niall McGinn's solo run and shot that went close to providing some respite but it was the visitors that went deservedly ahead in the 36th minute, Jordan Rhodes beating both Osborne and Eger to head past Richard Lee.
Rösler made two changes at the break; Bean and O'Connor giving way to Diagouraga and Weston, changing formation to have two strikers up top. Brentford carved out the first chance on the switch-around. From Osborne's long pass, Clarkson created an opening for Weston, but the wing man could not get to the ball in time. It was Town's turn to respond, Rhodes cracking the crossbar in the 63rd minute with Lee well beaten.
But the visitors went further ahead seven minutes later; Novak's delightful lob from Damien Johnson's smart pass flew over Richard Lee and into the net.
However, Brentford should have reduced the arrears two minutes later when firstly Diagouraga and subsequently McGinn having their shots beaten away in succesion by 39-year-old goalkeeper Ian Bennett. Town increased their lead in the 76th minute, Jordan Rhodes with a simple header from a Lee Novak right-wing cross, Eger failing to clear the danger. The rout was completed by Gary Roberts two minutes later, Rhodes the supplier.
