Brentford Football Club have signed Javier Rodrigues Venta after he left Spanish giants Villarreal CF.
The 37-year-old – known as Javi Venta – completed a medical this morning and has agreed to join The Bees on a one-year contract with an option to extend for a second year if he plays a certain number of games.
The deal is subject to international clearance.
The Spaniard, who plays at right back, joined Villarreal in 1999 and played almost 200 games in the top division in Spain, La Liga.
Mark Warburton, Brentford FC Sporting Director, said: “This is a signing that brings a wealth of experience and ability to the squad.
“Javi has been first choice right back at Villarreal and has played at the highest level.
“He has an outstanding reputation in Spain for his professionalism and approach to the game.
“Javi has, like all our signings, been put through a rigorous testing procedure and we are delighted to see how well he performed and how clear his ambition is to take on a new challenge of the like presented by Brentford.
“This is a very different signing and is a coup for us.
“We are looking to expand our recruitment network and add value to the squad.
“We hope this signing sends out a message to the fans.
“Javi is moving his family over and that shows the commitment he has to the Club.
“We are looking forward to welcoming him to Griffin Park.”
Javi had a spell on loan at CD Tenerife and moved to Levante UD from 2010 to 2012 before returning to Villarreal.
He left the Spanish side at the end of the 2012/13 season.
He was part of the Villarreal squad that reached the UEFA Cup Semi-Finals in 2003/04 and the Quarter-Finals a year later.
He was also involved as Villarreal reached the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals in 2005/06 and finished second in La Liga in 2007/08.
Javi spoke to Bees Player after completing the move – see an interview with the new signing shortly.
