Brentford win with goals from Clayton Donaldson and a brace from Stuart Dallas.

Brentford returned to Boreham Wood after their FA Cup success last season, this time winning 3-1 at a balmy Meadow Park in The Bees latest pre-season friendly on Tuesday night.

Stuart Dallas scored a brace, both well taken goals, Clayton Donaldson marking his return from injury with his side’s second.

Will Grigg made his debut appearance in a Brentford shirt on UK soil, partnering Clayton Donaldson up front in a 4-4-2 formation.

Sam Saunders and Stuart Dallas operated on each flank with Toumani Diagouraga and Jake Reeves in central midfield.

Scott Barron returned from injury at left back as part of a defence that included captain Kevin O’Connor at centre back, partnering Aaron Pierre.

Javi Venta, recently signed from Villareal CF, was given his first start at right back with trialist Winstone Boldt in goal.

Former Brentford striker Callum Willock led the line for the home side.

The visitors dominated the early exchanges, Clayton Donaldson’s header from Sam Saunders left wing cross going narrowly over the bar.

The early stages of the game were largely Brentford’s, but without creating the chances that their possession deserved.

They went closest when Clayton Donaldson’s 14th minute strike was superbly tipped round the post by James Russell in the Boreham Wood goal, who frustrated the Brentford attack all evening.

Sixty seconds later Toumani Diagouraga made a run through the Wood defence, however his pass could not find Donaldson and Russell smothered the ball before The Bees striker could reach it.

In the 16th minute, the home side took the lead against the run of play with their first attack.

Donovan Simmonds attacked down the right flank and his cross found ex-Bee Callum Willock, whose aerial challenge beat goalkeeper Boldt to the ball and nestled into the net.

Four minutes later Boreham Wood could have doubled their advantage but Boldt tipped away Graeme Montgomery’s shot from inside the Brentford penalty area.

In the 25th minute Sam Saunders direct free kick went over the bar, awarded for a heavy challenge by Mario Noto on Stuart Dallas.

The Wood midfielder made a robust tackle again ten minutes later, this time on Diagouraga, but the referee took no action.

Donovan Simmonds lashed a strike from outside the area that had Boldt beaten but the shot sailed wide of the goalkeeper’s left-hand post.

Diagouraga’s 38th minute shot tested Russell but landed two yards wide.

Four minutes later, Brentford equalised, Dallas’ strike beating Russell from just inside the area, a really cool finish from Grigg’s right wing cross.

Sam Saunders could have edged Brentford ahead just before the break, but his left foot shot went narrowly over the bar.

Uwe Rosler made one substitution at half-time, Manny Oyeleke replacing Barron at left back.

Two minutes after the restart Boreham Wood gave Boldt a scare, Noto’s opportunist effort from thirty yards cracking the Brentford bar.

This was to be the end of Boreham Wood troubling The Bees defence, for the visitors took control the game.

Dallas and Donaldson combined for the latter to trouble the Wood defence with a cross but Diagouraga’s shot when well placed in the penalty area went high over Russell’s cross bar.

Brentford increased the intensity levels further, firstly Reeves and then Donaldson going close within a minute.

Russell came to his side’s rescue again, beating away Saunders low drive with his feet – then seconds later Grigg shot wide.

The pressure eventually told in the 55th minute, Donaldson’s right foot shot from just inside the area beating Russell, Saunders the provider.

Just past the hour mark, a trio of substitutions were made; Paul Hayes, Luke Norris and Josh Clarke replacing Diagouraga, Donaldson and Grigg.

Saunders shot tested Russell in the 67th minute but save of the night by the home goalkeeper arrived two minutes later, tipping away a Hayes shot from just outside the six yard box.

Substitute Charlie Adams almost scored Brentford’s third in the 77th minute but his long range shot from the left flank went wide of Russell’s post.

Kevin O’Connor’s effort was cleared off the line a minute later but Brentford wrapped things up in the 85th minute with their third goal, Dallas’s low drive beating Russell after he capitalised on the goalkeeper’s poor clearance.
