Centre half signs on loan from Sheffield Wednesday

Brentford have signed central defender Martin Taylor on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.

Martin has been with Sheffield Wednesday since the summer of 2012 and has played almost all of his football in the top two divisions of English football.

He came through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers and earned England Under-21 recognition before moving to Birmingham City and then Watford.

The 33-year-old, who won a League Cup winners’ medal when at Blackburn, joined Wednesday in August 2012 and played 13 games for the Championship side last season.

He has been part of Wednesday’s 18-man match day squad this season without making a further appearance.

He has joined The Bees for an initial four-week period.

Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler said: “Ever since Liam Moore left us last season [to go back to parent club Leicester City] we have been after a centre half.

“We worked on a few things in the transfer window and we got Ben Nugent in from Cardiff City on loan but I felt we needed more competition in that department.

“With Jake Bidwell out injured and Scott Barron coming back from a long layoff and then picking up a groin problem that meant he couldn’t play against Bradford City on Saturday we needed to bolster the defence.

“Martin had a bunch of experience.

“He is a big unit.

“The [4-0 defeat] at Bradford showed that we need someone who can kick the ball and head it away and lead other players around them.

“It is worthwhile for us to get someone with Martin’s experience on loan and both parties can see where we are after that has finished.”

Mark Warburton, Brentford FC Sporting Director, said: “Martin is a vastly experience player and an excellent professional.

“He will have an impact both on and off the pitch.

“His experience will be a key facet for us in the upcoming fixtures.

“We welcome him to Griffin Park and look forward to seeing him in action over the coming weeks.”

Martin will stay at Griffin Park until October 7.

The centre half spoke to Bees Player after completing the move, subscribers can see an interview soon.
