COULD THIS BE BRENTFORD'S YEAR?
The 2008/09 Johnstone's Paint Trophy kicks off next week with a showpiece final at the new Wembley Stadium and six-figure jackpot awaiting this season's finalists.
The Bees take on Yeovil Town at Griffin Park on Tuesday 2nd September at 7:30pm with the enticing prospect of an appearance at the home of English football on the cards.
The financial rewards that can be won from the cup competition for clubs from Leagues 1 and 2 are significant, with last season's finalists - Milton Keynes Dons and Grimsby Town - each pocketing more than £350,000 in gate receipts alone. This season's total prize fund is £400,000, with the winning club earning a total jackpot of £100,000 and this week's first round winners picking up £4,000 each.
Speaking on Thursday, Brentford Manager Andy Scott said:
"The Trophy is important because we want to keep the momentum going. Winning's a nice habit to get into so we need to get a good result against Rotherham on Saturday and take that into the Johnston's Paint Trophy. Yeovil will be a tough one. They gave Middlesbrough a decent game when they lost in midweek. It may be an opportunity not just to rest players but to give other players an opportunity to show what they can do but certainly I'm not going to make wholesale changes, in fact I'm unable to in terms of the competition's rules and regulations. But it is an opportunity for the players who have been on the fringes to come in and show what they can do."
As in recent seasons, special efforts are being made to attract more young fans to matches in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Brentford are offering free tickets to under 16's when accompanied by an adult with adult tickets priced just £10 and seniors £5.
For more information call 0845 3456 442 (option 4) or visit www.brentfordfc.co.uk - pleasse note that only student tickets are available to purchase in advance of this fixture - all other admission is on the turnstile only.
In order to avoid a late finish, the match will also kick-off at the earlier time of 7:30pm. There will also be no extra-time in drawn matches in the competition, with deadlocked games being decided by penalty shoot-outs at the end of 90 minutes.
Clubs have also continued their commitment to fielding full-strength teams throughout the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Under the competition's rules, clubs will be required to include in their matchday line-up a majority of the 11 players that have appeared most often in first team games this season.
