Brentford manager Andy Scott said he was frustrated his side did not pull off a Carling Cup shock as they lost to Championship Bristol City.
The League One Bees had the better of it against their higher division opponents but lost to a Nicky Maynard goal just before the hour mark.
Scott said he was disappointed with the goal his side conceded and the way they played for a short period after City striker Danny Haynes was sent off for a second bookable offence just before the goal.
But he admitted that underneath he was "delighted".
"Their goal came from a fantastic ball in," said Scott. "We dealt with the first one but it came back in an we weren't marking.
"I was disappointed with the goal but that was the only part of the game we didn't dominate.
"The people that didn't go to Carlisle [where Brentford won 3-1 on the opening day of the season] have seen a performance on a par with that.
"Three months into last season I was telling the lads to believe in themselves and I have just said it again.
"If they don't believe they are a good side now they never will.
"I'm proud of the lads and proud of the fact that days into the season we are showing we are a cohesive unit."
Scott confirmed there may be a new man coming into that unit in the next few days.
"We have agreed a deal with Carlisle [to sign winger Cleveland Taylor]," added Scott. "And we are close to agreeing a deal that would bring him to us.
"He is a player we have been after since probably this week last year - he will give us an extra dimension.
"We are hoping to bring in one more player after that, maybe two."
