Brentford defender Danny Foster said he felt his side did enough to beat Championship Bristol City in the Carling Cup First Round.
The Bees bowed out of the competition with a 1-0 defeat but had the better of the match and forced a number of fine saves from City goalkeeper Dean Gerken.
The home side also hit the post and Steve Kabba missed from close range as Brentford came close to an upset against a City side who had Danny Haynes sent off for two bookable offences.
And Foster, who signed in the close season from Dagenham and Redbridge, said he felt they would have deserved it.
"I felt we did enough to win the game," he said. "With them going down to ten men we should have capitalised.
"But it wasn't meant to be.
"We conceded a scrappy goal but we are working hard as a back four.
"I would like to think anyone who has watched out last two games would see the teams against us haven't created a lot of opportunities."
Foster said the win at Carlisle on Saturday set the team up for the week and although they lost against Bristol City confidence was still high.
"We have got to get over it quickly," he added. "It's good we have a game on Saturday.
"The boys will come in and be ready to prepare for it."
