SCOTT PLEASED WITH BEES CHARACTER

Posted on: Wed 02 Sep 2009

Speaking to the press directly after Tuesday night's defeat to Norwich in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, Brentford manager Andy Scott said that he was pleased with how his team responded to what he considered to be a poor start.

"We didn't start the game well and invited a lot of pressure on ourselves which they duly exerted. We were losing the first header and the second ball and he (Chris Martin) took the goal well.

"I thought the last 15 minutes of the first half and most of the second half we had a lot of possession, caused them a lot of problems and had a couple of chances.

"Marcus Bean is still a little bit down on his fitness but was excellent tonight, I was very pleased with a lot of the lads and once we sorted ourselves out and changed it a little bit, (we were fine)"

Andy explained that a combination of the competition rules and his potential team selection for Saturday's match at Charlton was behind a few players playing out of position - most noticeably Danny Foster at left-back.

"With Dicko injured and the transfer deadline closing today if Sam had played and been injured we wouldn't have had a left sided defender for Saturday as Ryan Blake has a niggle as well.

"It was a case of who we couldn't risk because of these competition rules where there have to be six first team players out of the first eleven - and out of that we've got Alan Bennett, Ryan Dickson and Mark Phillips injured. James Wilson is away on international duty.

"I'd like to have played Nikki Bull tonight and give some other players opportunities but I had to play the six players and basically that picked itself"

Andy reserved special praise for his central defensive partnership, which included Leon Legge making his professional competitive debut.

"I was delighted with them both and Leon should be very pleased with his debut.

"It was a big test of character for him. He's come from Tonbridge Angels, playing in front of a few hundred people, he's made his debut in front of twelve thousand today, both him and Karleigh were outstanding.

"Foz (Danny Foster) and Kevin (O'Connor) helped them out really well but that central defensive partnership was very poor against Aldershot last Monday so it was a little bit of a gamble but I've got faith in them.

"I've bought these players to the football club and played them because they're good enough and if they can't perform on a stage like this and want to then we're going to find out about them very quickly"

Finally, Andy dismissed the recent press speculation in the linking him with the vacant Barnsley job.

"I've heard nothing. When vacancies become available at clubs then names are always banded about but I've heard nothing from Barnsley. I'm getting on with doing my job here and until someone tells me otherwise I'm going to continue. I've put a good squad together here, I think we've got a really good chance and I don't want to detract from what we're doing or take attention away from that, I'm very happy at Brentford and have assembled this squad for a reason and I want to make sure we can compete against Charlton on Saturday - it's a big game and our concentration is fully on that."
