Brentford manager Andy Scott admitted Charlton Athletic were the better side and deserved their 2-0 win over his team but said he felt his players gave a good account of themselves.
The Bees suffered their first league defeat of the season at The Valley to pace-setters Charlton, who have now won six out of six since relegation from The Championship.
Deon Burton and Lloyd Sam scored the goals for the hosts and, although David Hunt hit the crossbar and Carl Cort forced a brilliant save out of Rob Elliott, Brentford couldn't fight back.
Scott said: "I don't like losing, we gave away two poor goals in areas we don't usually do so but we responded well and kept battling away.
"I'm pleased we gave a good account of ourselves.
"Charlton were always expected to be the better side but we came here to have a go.
"A lot of sides would have come to try and defend and lost 2-0. We fancy we can beat anyone and on our day we can."
Scott said his players would have to learn from the goals they gave away - the first from a weak Sam Wood back header the second when Charlton kept the ball for 25 to 30 passes.
"I believe in my players," he added. "They believe in each other but today they made mistakes and got punished.
"When you make mistakes against good sides they will punish you.
"Everyone gave it a right good go and wanted to prove they are on a par with the Charlton boys."
