BEES DESERVED 'IMPORTANT' WIN

Posted on: Wed 30 Sep 2009

Two-goal hero Kevin O'Connor said the 2-1 win over Southend United secured by his penalty brace was "important".

The long-serving midfield man scored twice from the spot - including one in stoppage time - as The Bees came from a goal down - awarded by an assistant referee who said goalkeeper Nikki Bull had carried a Simon Francis free kick over his own line - to win.

O'Connor said he felt his team deserved the win and it was crucial they bounced back after recent defeats.

"Considering how we played at Yeovil on Saturday it was important we bounced back," he said. "I thought we deserved it.

"There's not a lot you can do [when you concede a goal like that]. We said at half time to pretend it is 0-0.

"It was a freak goal and no-one knows if it went in or not.

"We have to get on with it and we managed to do that.

"It was all about a response from Saturday and at half time we were happy with the way we were playing.

"If it had stayed 1-1 we would have been disappointed not to win but delighted to come back [from the loss at Yeovil] in the way we did."

O'Connor said he had spoken with Charlie MacDonald, who took a lot of Brentford's penalties last year, and it had been agreed he would take them.

"I know if I don't fancy it Charlie is happy to have it," he added. "A few people weren't sure about me taking the second one.

"All sorts goes through your mind.

"Luckily enough it went it."
