The "Band of Mothers" as they are known, who were presented with a special Recognition Award by Prince Harry at The Sun`s televised Millies Awards Presentation last December, set up this support network for the families who have lost loved ones and in doing so, just last weekend, organised for 10,000 "home comfort" boxes to be delivered to all British service personnel serving in Afghanistan.

Drawing on his own service in Afghanistan last year, Prince Harry said: "As far as what the Band of Mothers are doing with this courage - sending parcels to every single serviceman and woman in Afghanistan - I can tell you firsthand what a difference it makes. It's not just what's inside that counts, it's also the knowledge people are thinking of you back home."

Speaking of the Football League`s support of "Help for Heroes" his brother Prince William said: "The Football League's week of action to support Help for Heroes is a superb way of getting behind the men and women of the Armed Services, who lay their lives on the line for us - and so many of whom have been badly wounded.

"These Servicemen and women, for whom duty is everything, have earned the support of this country. I urge everyone at a League game to get behind Help for Heroes in any way they can."

Lord Mawhinney, Chairman of The Football League said: "The contribution being made by our armed forces around the world is both outstanding and humbling.

"As a nation we seldom thank them enough for the sacrifices they make. The Football for Heroes week will provide an excellent opportunity for supporters to show their appreciation for the work they do."

The Football League initiative has also received cross-party political support as both the Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe and Shadow Sports and Olympics Minister, Hugh Robertson, have added their voices to the raft of plaudits already voiced.

"I am delighted to support The Football League's 'Football for Heroes' week that is giving something back to so many of our loyal troops and their families," said Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South. "It's fantastic that all 72 clubs in The League are right behind this and also working hard to raise money for our soldiers inured in the line of duty for their country."

And his counterpart, Robertson - MP for Faversham and Mid Kent - added: "Having spent just over ten years in The Army myself, I know how important it is for soldiers on active service to know that they are supported at home. Through their many clubs, The Football League are uniquely placed to make this contribution and I am absolutely delighted that they are supporting Help for Heroes."

In just 28 months, Help for Heroes has raised an incredible £40m and League clubs will continue generating funds and awareness of the charity until the end of the season.

There will be a number of service personnel in attendance on Saturday here at Griffin Park together with Denise Harris founder of the "Afghan Heroes" will be here together with other members of the "Band of Mothers". At half time operatic tenor Tim Pitman will be performing a new single "Field of Dreams" which is being released to raise funds for "Afghan Heroes" whilst there will be a match day collection pre match and at half time for the charity.
