Brentford manager Andy Scott said his team "beat themselves" in their match against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Bees suffered a 3-0 defeat on the south coast as the home side took the lead just past the half hour and sealed it with two goals in second half stoppage time.

Scott was critical of the amount of free kicks his team gave away and the way they defended them - Brighton's first two goals came from set pieces - but was unhappy with some of the officiating, particularly a decision not to award a penalty for a foul on Charlie MacDonald when the score was 0-0 and the sending off of Alan Bennett.

He said: "We have beaten ourselves, as simple as that. We gave away free kicks in poor areas and didn't defend them.

"We have probably given away more fouls today than in the past three games put together.

"Until five minutes to go we were right in it and they were holding on.

"Then there was another foul and a penalty that was indicative of the way the referee refereed the game.

"Why would Charlie go down if he was about to shoot [in the first half]?

"The linesman thought he was a referee - there were some bizarre decisions, their penalty was probably a penalty but a sending off? I don't think so.

"He is a yard away and it hit his hand.

"But we can't blame the referee."

Scott said Mark Phillips' knee problem had flared up causing him to be substituted at half time and Leon Legge was also injured and struggling to be fit for the match at Stockport County.

He admitted with Alan Bennett now suspended and Tommy Smith back at Ipswich Town he had a defensive problem.

"We will have to try and get through," he added.
