Brentford captain Kevin O'Connor said the players were aware they were the architects of their own downfall against Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Bees slipped to a 3-0 defeat on the south coast and O'Connor admitted poor defending had cost them the first goal - scored by Glenn Murray from an Elliott Bennett free kick.
But he said The Bees should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Charlie MacDonald moments earlier when he was about to shoot from ten yards after turning Adam El-Abd and appeared to be hauled down by the defender.
O'Connor said: "We were at fault for their first goal and their others came when we were chasing the game so it looks like a big defeat.
"It looked like their guy had his arms around Charlie [just before they scored] and it looked like a pen.
"But you don't tend to get them away from home.
"They have gone up the other end, we gave a cheap foul away, we haven't tracked our men properly and they scored.
"It's disappointing when you go to the big teams and do well and we have to grind out results against the other teams.
"We have Saturday [away to Stockport County] to put it right."
