Man of the Match Wojciech Szczesny described Brentford's 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers as a "great result".

The on-loan goalkeeper - who vowed to fight for the number 1 position at parent club Arsenal when he returns to the Premier League club - admitted The Bees had been below their best but hailed their ability to keep going and said they merited the victory.

"It's a great result," said Szczesny, who was named Man of the Match by the sponsors. "We didn't play very well but we kept going right to the end and we got the three points which was the important thing.

"We are looking to finish the season unbeaten and hopefully keep our place in the top ten.

"The main target is to win the next game and then the next, if we keep doing that we will climb the table.

"We deserved the points, we were the better side.

"First half it looked a little like a lazy day.

"It must be difficult for the lads, we are not going to fight for the play offs and we won't go down.

"It's hard to get the motivation right, but we did and we took the three points."

Szczesny said he had no chance with Tranmere's equaliser - scored by Joss Labadie - as he did not see it and explained why he has made so many headline-grabbing saves.

"I didn't see it at all," he continued. "I said to the manager, if I had seen it, I would have saved it.

"It was on his weak side and was a great strike.

"I put the saves down to not giving up."

Speaking about the miraculous save from Chris Lines at Bristol Rovers on Saturday, he added: "He had a tap in, I spread myself, hoping it would hit me.

"Thankfully it did, it wasn't a reaction save, it just hit me.

"I feel I have improved the basics [since I have been here] - if I pull off a great save, it's a bonus, the most important thing is to do the basics right."
