Brentford midfielder David Hunt said the performance against Swindon Town showed Brentford could compete with the top teams in League One.
The Bees slipped to their first defeat in 11 games, losing 3-2, and Hunt - who scored Brentford's first with a fierce left footed shot - admitted to being disappointed but was not too downhearted.
Hunt said: "They are the only team to have done the double over us, we wanted to make sure they didn't.
"It's been 3-2 both times, we have shown we can compete with the teams at the top of the league.
"The lads worked hard, we have got a game plan and if we stick to it we get our rewards.
"We were not coming her to get pushed over.
"We came to get a win [unfortunately we didn't].
Hunt said assistant manager Terry Bullivant had been working hard to get the players to keep their shots on target, and that helped with his goal.
He added that he completely forgot to mark the birth of his daughter Casey with the traditional rocking the baby celebration.
"Bully has been on at everyone to hit the target," said Hunt. "Thankfully it came back to me again [after my first shot was saved].
"I never know what to do when I score.
"I'm happy to score, unfortunately it means nothing when we lose.
"We need to be a bit smarter in games, use a bit of experience.
"The lads have to learn from games like today, we needed to close the game down just before half time, unfortunately we didn't.
"We had plenty of chances - we definitely should have taken something from the game, unfortunately we didn't.
"I hate losing."
