Kevin O'Connor paid tribute to the Brentford fans who turned up to his testimonial match against Fulham.
More than 4,000 came through the door to see the match organised as a tribute to the long-serving O'Connor, who has racked up more than 400 appearances since his début early in 2000.
The Bees were beaten 5-0 by their Premiership neighbours in the pre-season friendly but O'Connor, who was ill in the build-up to the match, said it was a good workout for the squad.
"I'm delighted 4,000 people turned up to support the game," said O'Connor.
"I'm disappointed with the result but they are quality opposition.
"I felt really fit and could have kept going and there were no reactions from the illness."
O'Connor said pre-season had gone well to date and everyone was building up to the new season.
He added he was impressed with the quality of squad manager Andy Scott had put together.
"We are one of the fittest teams in the league and the strength in depth in the squad is better than last year.
"We are making some good acquisitions.
"We finished ninth last year, we have to be positive but it is only our second season so we have to be cautious - but optimistic."
