Brentford manager Andy Scott said he is "pretty happy" with his squad two and a half weeks before the start of the season.
The Bees drew their latest pre-season friendly 1-1 with Wycombe Wanderers at Griffin Park in a match Scott described as a "good test" and the Bees boss said he was content with the progress being made.
But he is not complacent and said there are still plenty of areas to work on before season starts on August 7 with an away match against Carlisle United.
"I'm very happy with the fitness [of the players]," said Scott. "We will start sharpening up now and that was always the plan.
"We are still a couple short in terms of the squad.
"We need a little more strength in depth in a couple of areas.
"Everyone can see we are working and improving, the lads have taken on what we have asked of them.
"Defensively we looked more solid and we are starting to move the ball out wide well.
"There are areas to work on but with two and a half weeks left I'm pretty happy."
Scott said he wanted to give both young stopper Simon Moore and new signing Richard Lee a game against Football League and non-league opposition in the first four friendlies and confirmed the former Watford man would play against Staines Town on Thursday, along with the other players who did not feature against Wycombe.
He said Charlie MacDonald had a slight knock and he had backed out of a deal to sign a player last week as he did not feel it was right for the club.
He added: "Time is ticking on and we need to get the players in and playing.
"The players we are looking to bring in will really pick up the quality - if we can get them in it will be fantastic.
"We are looking high and low for the right ones and they have been long term targets."
He said he was hoping to add more bodies to the squad in the next week.
