Nicky Forster said the ambitions of manager Andy Scott were a key factor in bringing him back to the club.
Forster returned to Griffin Park in the summer more than 13 years after leaving for Birmingham City after two and a half successful seasons at the club.
He said the current Brentford Football Club was "unrecognisable" from the one he left behind in January 1997 but he was looking forward to the challenge ahead.
"I was inspired by the manager and his ambition for the club [to come back]," said Forster.
"I was reluctant to come back before I spoke to the manager, I didn't really want to go over old ground.
"But the club has moved on, it has changed, I have changed.
"I like the manager's ambition, what he had to say and the drive he has got.
"He and [chief executive] Andrew Mills sold the club to me.
"This is a club moving in the right direction, I'm glad to be part of it."
Forster admitted he was not happy with his performance against Wycombe but pleased to get 90 minutes football under his belt.
"Pre-season is not about performance," said the striker. "It's about fitness and getting back into the swing of things.
"We have a lot of football left before the start of the season.
"I would like to be getting more chances, we have only scored one goal and that doesn't reflect well going forward.
"But it's a work in progress.
"The first part of pre-season is about finding a basic level of fitness, we have done work on the defensive units and are starting to bring in work going forward.
"I am looking forward to the season - I have come her to be successful, I haven't come here to coast."
