Brentford manager Andy Scott admitted his side have to do better than their performance in the pre-season defeat to Staines Town if they are to have a successful season.

The Bees lost 3-2 to their neighbours, who play in the Conference South, despite goals from Michael Spillane and Sam Saunders.

Scott said he was unhappy with the tempo his side played at in the first half and with much of their defending.

He added it appeared young striker James Ward had broken his leg which had "put a massive dampener on the evening".

Scott said: "We have to stop thinking [individuals] can play the way [they] want to play on their own.

"We have to play the way I want and if people aren't prepared to do that [they won't play].

"We left Michael Spillane in our box outnumbered too many times.

"They got in crosses from throw ins far too easily.

"We were outnumbered often so they will have chances.

"Richard Lee made three or four good saves in the first half, although he has to do better for the third goal.

"We have to do better.

"The way we play is the right way to win games - we didn't have that tonight.

"If we are going to be successful we have to maintain our standards.

"We didn't do well enough in the first half, we didn't play with our tempo and didn't fill the box from crosses.

"It wasn't easy, we had some young lads playing and some new players and they can't be expected to come straight in and do things our way.

"They need to be guided by those that have been playing.

"In the second half we put pressure on but still didn't do enough in the final third.

"But we got 90 minutes out of a lot of them - Toumani Diagouraga especially - and the fitness was good."

Scott added Charlie MacDonald and Carl Cort were ruled out with injuries and some other players had knocks, which means he will look at some trialists in the forthcoming pre-season games.
