'WE DIDN'T DO THE BASICS RIGHT' - SCOTT

Posted on: Sun 08 Aug 2010

Brentford manager Andy Scott said his team did not do the basics well enough as they slipped to a defeat on the opening day of the season against Carlisle United.

The Bees slipped to a 2-0 defeat against the Cumbrian side, who scored two first half goals, and Scott admitted he was particularly upset with his team's showing in the first period.

But he said he saw green shoots of recovery in the second period and with players to return to the team and full fitness he was confident his team would improve.

"We didn't do the basics right," said Scott. "In the first half particularly but sometimes in the second too.

"I'm not pleased, I don't like losing games.

"The way we played in the first half wasn't the usual Brentford.

"We have a lot of new players, it's not an excuse it's a reason for us to get it right, and get it right quickly.

"We need to work hard to get back to what we do best.

"We win and lose as a team and the whole team has to take responsibility.

"We defended too deep and we got pulled apart.

"If we had got in at half time 1-0 it might have been different but we gave away a poor penalty and then were really up against it."

Scott said he could have taken any of his players off at half time - he withdrew David McCracken and Michael Spillane - but drew some encouragement from the second half showing.

"Robbie Simpson came on and did very well," said Scott. "And we got 25 minutes out of Charlie [MacDonald], which is all he could manage.

"But we also lost Myles Weston to a groin injury, which is disappointing.

"There were shoots in the second half, if we can [play like that] it's what we are about.

"We need to come into training and reinforce the points we are trying to get across.

"I'm confident in my team and players."
