Gary Alexander said he has come to Brentford as he feels the club have a chance of being promoted.
The striker signed from Millwall two days before the start of the season and made his début in the opening day defeat against Carlisle United.
The powerful front man admitted the team had not performed well but insisted there was more to come.
"I want to be playing football," said Alexander. "I have worked with the gaffer [Andy Scott] before and I have heard he is a good manager.
"The gaffer is putting together a good squad and I'm glad to be part of it.
"I had two years of success and Millwall, losing in the play-off final and winning it last year.
"I wouldn't have come to Brentford if I didn't think we could get out of this league.
"No-one wants to lose on the first day of the season.
"It was a poor performance and we got what we deserved.
"We are putting together a squad capable of challenging in this league.
"It's the first day of the season, there will be lots of other teams that have lost.
"We have to put it right."
