Brentford defender Craig Woodman put the goal and assist on his home début down to "putting the ball in the right areas".
The left back scored the winning goal as The Bees progressed to the Second Round of the Carling Cup by beating Cheltenham Town 2-1.
And he set up the first for Robbie Simpson with a left wing cross.
"We try to pick out areas and hope the lads make the right runs," said Woodman. "I put it in the right area and Robbie got on the end of it.
"It was a great header from him.
"[When I put the free kick in] the keeper doesn't know which way to go.
"If he tries to read it it goes the other way - I just try to put it in the right areas."
Woodman admitted he had not really taken many set pieces earlier in his career but was looking to improve that aspect of his game, along with others.
He said he was glad the season proper had started but was not satisfied with the performance against Cheltenham.
"The second half performance was disappointing," said Woodman.
"It was a fairly comfortable first half but a difficult second and that is what we need to improve on.
"It's still early in the season but we have to improve.
"It was nice to go in at half time 2-0 up, we put pressure on them and did the right things, we didn't do that in the second half."
