Robbie Simpson said the televised victory over Sheffield Wednesday was "a great result".

The Bees forward did everything but score in the 1-0 win, hitting the bar and seeing an effort cleared off the line.

In the end, a Charlie MacDonald goal, just before half time, was enough to give The Bees the points.

Simpson said it did not worry him that he had not scored, as it was the win that counted.

"It's a great result," he continued. "They have some great players, are a great team and will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

"It's a great scalp.

"I said last week [after the Rochdale defeat], Tuesday [in the Johnstone Paint Trophy against Stevenage] was important to get a clean sheet and give us a boost - we got that, even though we didn't play as well as we had done.

"We got the goal, won the game and kept the clean sheet.

"After that game, all the lads saw what we had to do to win games."

Simpson hailed the Brentford fans for keeping the team going forward in the later stages of the game and said MacDonald's goal was something the striker had perfected in training when the two were working together on Saturday.

He added the lack of chances created by Sheffield Wednesday was a testament to how well the defence had played and the win had to be used as a kick-start to the season.

"All the boys are buzzing," said Simpson. "We can't wait to get into training and work towards next Saturday.

"I said after [beating] Hull [in the League Cup Second Round], we needed to kick on.

"We have shown what we can do, now we have to do it."
