Terry, a midfielder with Fulham, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic before joining Brentford in 1983, made 37 appearances for The Bees, including a substitute appearance in the 1985 Freight Rover Final at Wembley.

He went on to manage Barnet and Reading before joining the coaching staff at Crystal Palace prior to becoming a coach at Griffin Park in the summer of 1998 alongside Ray Lewington and Brian Sparrow. He helped lead the team to promotion in his first season and remained at the Club for almost three seasons before subsequently returning to Crystal Palace as a coach. He went on to fulfil the same role at both Watford and Birmingham City.
