Brentford signed off their pre-season campaign in style with an emphatic win over Woking at Kingfield on Saturday afternoon.

Following a first forty-five minutes that saw no goals but plenty of Bees posession, the away side put their out-of-sorts hosts to the sword in the second half, with a brace from Alan Connell, plus further strikes from Marvin Williams, Glenn Poole and trialist Mark Phillips.

Bees manager Andy Scott fielded a strong starting line-up, although Charlie MacDonald was rested as a precaution. The central defensive partnership consisted of trialists Phillips, and James Wilson of Championship side Bristol City.

The game got off to a sluggish start in the mid-afternoon heat, and the first chance of note came on 20 minutes as Sam Wood fired across goal, Connell stretching but just failing to get the vital touch.

Five minutes later the lively Williams disposessed Ashley Quashie Pownall and crossed for Nathan Elder, who saw his shot deflected wide by what looked very much like a defender's arm - but despite appeals from the away side, they had to settle for a corner.

The Bees were now very much in the ascendancy and a great cross-field pass from Adam Newton was picked up by the advancing Poole, his cross was headed wide by a well-placed Connell with Elder not quite able to profit either.

On the half-hour mark, Connell swivelled and shot straight at the keeper after a fine lay-off from Elder from another decent Poole cross.

The hosts rarely threatened, their only effort of note coming on 32 minutes when Joel Ledgister thrashed a shot way over Ben Hamer's crossbar.

Elder then headed across goal from a teasing Williams cross, before Connell saw his volleyed effort gathered at the second attempt by Nick Gindre in the Woking goal.

Williams missed a great chance to give his side the lead on the stroke of half-time, volleying well wide unmarked on the penalty spot.

However it wasn't to matter as Williams was well involved in the opening goal of the game, which came just seconds after the re-start, robbing Matt Gray and advancing into the penalty area to square to the unmarked Connell, who slid the ball into an empty net for his fifth goal of pre-season.

Four minutes later Connell rounded Gindre but took the ball too far wide, and as he crossed into the box a Woking defender very nearly inadvertently scored one of the all-time great own goals, a clearence from another Woking defender smashing him in the face on the edge of the box, the ball eventually going out for a corner having landed on the bar.

Not long after, the Bees deservedly doubled their lead. Connell's precision pass sliced the Woking defence in half and Poole took a touch before seeing his attempted cross totally deceive Gindre and float into the far corner of the net.

The Bees were now rampant, Elder curled wide with both Connell and Poole in close attendance, before on 58 minutes Williams got the goal he deserved, latching onto a loose pass to slot comfortably past Gindre from a tight angle.

Andy Scott made a series of substitutions, and trialist James Wilson did well to rob a well-placed Woking striker before the away side made it four on 65 minutes.

A well-worked corner saw Connell play the ball out to Poole. He drilled the ball goalwards and it landed at the feet of Phillips, who seemed almost embarassed to stroke the ball into the net with his left foot from four yards, with the defence rooted.

Minutes later the Bees completed their scoring for the afternoon with a scrappy fifth. Elder's powerful header took Gindre by suprise, and his efforts to block it only took the ball further goalwards, Connell stealing in at the far post to bundle the ball home.

The home side got a consolation with twelve minutes remaining, Wilson diving in on the edge of the box to concede a penalty which was converted by Barry Williams despite the best efforts of Seb Brown (who had replaced Hamer on the hour) who got a firm hand but could only help the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

The away side still had time to miss two great chances to make it six - firstly Poole fired a right-footed shot over from six yards following a smart dummy by Elder from Moses Ademola's low cross, and then Connell beat the offside trap but attempted an audacious lob that was never troubling Gindre.

Brentford lined up as follows:

Hamer (Seb Brown 60); Newton (Osborne 65), Phillips, Wilson, Wood (Dickson 48) (Mills 78); Williams (Ademola 72), Bean (O'Connor 58), Smith (Pead 58), Poole; Connell, Elder

Attendence: 966

It's been an altogether encouraging pre-season for Andy Scott and Terry Bullivant as they prepare for the season ahead by blooding eight new players into the squad together with giving a run out to a number of triallists. But the common theme throughout has been the fact that all the players have been keen on keeping the ball down and playing football. Certainly the general consensus of opinion form the fans who've witnessed the friendlies is that its been a big step in the right direction and gives great hope and optimism for the season ahead.
