ALDERSHOT TOWN 1 BRENTFORD 2

Charlie MacDonald scored his sixth goal of pre-season as Brentford ended their run in to the 2011/12 npower League One season with a 2-1 win over Aldershot Town.

The home side took the lead against the run of play with a Michael Rankine penalty but Gary Alexander's fifth of pre-season levelled it up, again from the spot.

The Bees had dominated the first half hour but the game was more even after that and both sides had chances.

MacDonald won the game with 14 minutes remaining with a delicate chip over substitute goalkeeper Jamie Young.

The win was probably deserved, particularly after Brentford's first half performance and they will wonder how they only went in level.

The Bees thought they had an early penalty when Alexander exchanged passes with Jake Reeves and burst in to the penalty area, only to go down under the challenge of Henrik Breimyr but nothing was given.

It was, however, a sign of things to come.

Brentford played the ball delightfully through the middle and cut Aldershot open at will.

Aaron Morris made a fine tackle to deny Clayton Donaldson before Reeves split the home defence and set the striker away - he drew goalkeeper Ross Worner but his powerful low shot was saved by the stopper.

Morris blocked again to prevent Donaldson converting a Shaleum Logan cross before Alexander sped away down the right and crossed low for Donaldson, the striker got his legs in a tangle and missed the target from close range.

Morris blocked another effort from the willing Donaldson and Reeves fired narrowly wide before Aaron Brown intercepted a Myles Weston cross that Donaldson seemed set to convert.

Aldershot had offered almost nothing - Richard Lee saving low from Rankine - but they were ahead just past the half hour.

A weak Logan header was picked up by Jake Taylor he rounded Lee and was brought down by the Brentford right back attempting to recover.

Rankine hit the penalty high to Lee's left to open the scoring.

Alex Rodman fired across the face of goal soon after as Aldershot grew in confidence but Brentford were soon level.

Sam Saunders' quickly taken free kick looked set for the back of the net before Anthony Pulis stuck up his arms to stop it.

Alexander stroked the penalty home to level matters.

The game was more even after that two-goal burst - Lee tipped a low Graham Montgomerie shot around the post before Taylor shot over while Weston forced a save from Worner at the other end and Darren Jones made a tackle to deny Donaldson again.

There were fewer chances after half time, with substitutions causing the game to lose a little of its flow.

Jermaine McGlashan and Danny Hylton shot wide for hosts while Weston did likewise for Brentford.

Lee tipped a dipping Ben Herd cross over the bar and Jones volleyed in to the side netting before Lee saved superbly from a Hylton header.

But it was The Bees who scored the winner - Saunders and trialist Christopher Aurier combined to create space from MacDonald, the first shot was blocked but he lifted the second effort over Young and the defenders on the line to win the game.

Aurier shot wide before Marcus Bean was just unable to head in a Kevin O'Connor cross and Jonathan Douglas volleyed wide.

Herd, Ryan Ware and Manny Panther missed the target with late efforts for the hosts while MacDonald forced a decent save out of Young in the dying stages.

But there were no further goals, despite later pressure, and Brentford ended their pre-season with another good victory to add to their tally.
