WEDNESDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Sat 17 Jul 2010

THE VISIT of League One side Brentford on Saturday not only gives Angels fans their first glimpse of the new-look team that Tommy Warrilow has put together, but also the chance to welcome back former player Leon Legge to the Longmead.

Legge left the club last season for the south London side and after making his debut against Norwich in a Football League Trophy tie in September 2009, made 29 appearances for the Bees, also scoring two goals.

He brings his Brentford side to the Longmead tomorrow in the first game of Angels's pre-season preparations and it will be interesting to see which personnel and formation Warrilow decides to choose.

Chairman Steve Churcher is looking forward to welcoming back Legge and to the match.

"Funnily enough, the first conversation I had with Tommy as chairman was the selling of Leggy to Brentford," Churcher said. "We all followed his progress and are chuffed at how he has done. You only have to look at how highly Brentford rate him - he signed a contract extension tying him to Griffin Park until 2011 - to see how well he has done and long may it continue.

"It will be nice to get things going again and Brentford will be bringing down a strong side, so it will be a good test for the squad. The main thing I will be looking for on Saturday is for the new players to begin to mould together as a team. Their quality is undoubted and it will be interesting to see how they play together.

"The signing on Saturday (Lewis Taylor), along with the others, shows we can attract the sort of player to Tonbridge that is of the highest quality. I am really excited about the squad and we have had a busy summer down at the ground, carrying out improvements and hopefully there will be a big crowd for Saturday's match."

Warrilow will be without Lewis Taylor, who is still recovering from injury, Lee Worgan (holiday) and Meshach Nugent (work commitments), but everyone else will be available.

"I spoke to Leggy last week, he was on a training camp in Spain or the Algarve, and he said they are fresh and buzzing," Warrilow said. "It should be an excellent test for my squad and the most important thing is to make everyone welcome on Saturday and create a good atmosphere

"It will take a few games for us to find our rhythm, you will see flashes of what we will be about I am sure, but this is our first pre-season game.

"It will be nice for him to come back to us, but, I know this might sound a bit harsh, he won't want to come back to non-league grounds that regularly anymore. He has his foot in the door and now it is up to him to force it wide open, but he certainly won't forget where he came from. I am just so pleased for how it has gone for him."

Get down to the Longmead tomorrow (Saturday), at 3pm to see how the new look Angels fare against Legge's Bees.

Fulham began life after Roy Hodgson with a resounding win against Brentford at Griffin Park.

The League One side may play in red and white striped shirts, but that's about the only similarity to Fulham's last opponents, Atletico Madrid, who beat the London side in the Europa League final in Hamburg two months ago.

Since then, of course, Hodgson has left for Liverpool and Fulham find themselves without a manager with the new Premier League season just 30 days away.

Chief executive Alastair Mackintosh, who has established a short list of candidates which includes former England boss Sven Goran-Eriksson, Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld and USA manager Bob Bradley, was at Griffin Park to watch caretaker boss Ray Lewington take charge of Fulham's first pre-season fixture.

But, despite Fulham's wish to name Hodgson's successor by the end of the week, there was no prospective manager sitting alongside Mackintosh in the stands.

Lewington, a former Brentford boss himself, fielded a strong Fulham side for Brentford captain Kevin O'Connor's testimonial.

First team regulars Brede Hangeland, Chris Baird, Paul Konchesky and Damien Duff all on show in the first 45 minutes and Aaron Hughes, Zoltan Gera and Simon Davies all featured in the second half.

Baird put the visitors ahead after 14 minutes, deceiving Brentford goalkeeper Richard Lee with a bobbling right foot shot from 25 yards.

But Brentford had the chance to equalise eight minutes later when makeshift central defender Stephen Kelly's clumsy challenge on Charlie Macdonald gave Andy Scott's side a penalty.

Macdonald stepped up but didn't do enough with his right-foot spot kick, which was easily saved by goalkeeper David Stockdale, diving to his right.

'England's number one,' came the ironic chant from the Fulham fans behind 24-year-old's goal.

David Elm, playing up front alongside the lively Eddie Johnson, made it 2-0 after 26 minutes with a first-time finish from the edge of the box after a weaving run from Bjorn Helge Riise.

The Swedish striker was at the heart of Fulham's third, too, teeing up Duff, who went past Lee before slotting the ball into an empty net.

Elm was replaced by Gera, Fulham's player of the season last season, at half-time and the Hungarian had an immediate impact, setting up Johnson for Fulham's fourth after 49 minutes.

Substitute Davies made it five with a right-foot finish inside the box after 67 minutes.

Fulham returned to action for the first time since the Europa League Final as they shook off the cobwebs with their first pre-season friendly at Brentford's Griffin Park.

And the Whites showed no signs of a summer hangover as they dominated a one-sided game with cool authority.

Backed by a very vocal turnout of travelling fans, the team created their first chance inside the first two minutes, Chris Baird curling a precise ball into the box. David Elm lost his marker and dived in to connect with his head, but his effort lacked accuracy and failed to trouble Richard Lee as it rolled wide of his right post.

Knocking the ball around with crispness and urgency, Ray Lewington's side carved out a second chance on seven minutes as Riise threaded a pass through to Eddie Johnson who outmuscled his marker, but saw his shot blocked as he bore down on goal.

But the lively American was involved again when Fulham opened their pre-season account just before the quarter hour. Surging down the left, he stretched the defence wide before cutting the ball back to the edge of the area where Chris Baird was lurking. The Irishman found himself with the time to take a touch, before aiming a low shot into the bottom corner past the unsighted Lee.

Within seven minutes though the Bees had the chance to level. Sam Saunders drove into the box and ran across Stephen Kelly, who inadvertently tripped the winger. A penalty was awarded which Charlie Macdonald stepped up to take, but he saw his low, powerful effort expertly stopped by David Stockdale in the Fulham net.

Shortly afterwards the hosts were made to rue their missed opportunity as Fulham doubled their advantage. This time it was Bjorn Helge Riise who was the orchestrator on the left, and David Elm was the grateful recipient as he side-footed first time, low to the keeper's right.

And before the half hour it was three. Riise was again involved as he combined with Elm who released Damien Duff into the area. The winger ran through one-on-one and neatly dinked the ball over the out-rushing goalkeeper to put clear daylight between us and our West London rivals.

Within minutes Johnson then had a chance to make it four as he raced on to a long cross field ball, but his confident first time strike was blocked by the legs of Lee as Fulham showed no signs of dropping off the pressure as the half drew to a close.

Having made 10 changes at half-time Brentford started the second period in positive fashion, and Stockdale had to get down low early on to get behind a low drive from Carl Cort.

But Fulham soon reasserted their authority when our own substitute, Zoltan Gera, picked up where he left off with last year's Europa League heroics as he threaded a pass through to Johnson. The striker knocked the ball wide of Lee with a purposeful first touch and then raced around to his left before side-footing into an empty net. 4-0.

Now clearly enjoying themselves, Riise outskilled his markers down the left before cutting inside, but determined to cap his run with a goal, he fired into the side netting when a cross may have been the better option.

Also exploiting space down the left was half-time introduction Alex Smith, and the promising Academy graduate did well just before the hour, flicking the ball over the right-back's head before supplying a neat dipping cross that only just evaded Simon Davies in the box.

But Davies made no mistake in getting on the end of his next opportunity. Gera made great progress down the right before supplying a searching low cross into the box. Johnson dummied at the near post, allowing it to run to Davies on the penalty spot, who confidently swept the ball into the net.

As the game drew to a close, Ray Lewington took the opportunity to blood several other promising prospects, as Courtney Harris, Matt Saunders, Neil Etheridge, Marcello Trotta, Cristian Marquez and Keanu Marsh-Brown entered the action, each equipping themselves well and keeping up the pressure on our hosts.

However, there were to be no more goals, as the Fulham faithful celebrated in festival fashion behind the Brentford goal, content that last season's momentum appears to have been carried through into the new campaign.
