WEDNESDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 23 Jul 2010

Wojciech Szczesny says he "feels something" for Brentford because they put their faith in him last season.

The young keeper spent six months on loan with the League One side and he earned many plaudits after some eye-catching performances for the Bees.

Now he's back at Arsenal and ready to show the Gunners what he learned at Griffin Park. But he won't forget his time at Brentford in a rush.

"I like the club, I feel something for them," Szczesny told Arsenal.com.

"I made my league debut there and they were the ones who really believed in me. Even if I made a mistake they believed in me and I have a very good relationship with them.

"I still have some good mates from Brentford so it has been great for me. I went back for the skipper's [Kevin O'Connor] testimonial last week.

"The loan was a great experience to have and that was the most important thing for me. I wanted to learn what it is like to play in the lower leagues and it worked out quite well because I had quite a few good performances.

"I hope I am going to show this year at Arsenal what I have learnt in my time at Brentford."

Szczesny's impressive performances for the Bees had Arsenal fans talking and in April Arsène Wenger told a press conference of his conviction that the Polish keeper would eventually become the Gunners' No 1.

Now the 20-year-old wants to show that his manager was right.

"It is always nice to hear nice things from the fans and from the manager," he told Arsenal.com. "I hope I can prove them right.

"I am confident and I knew how I had played so it wasn't a big surprise [to hear that praise] because I thought I had played well."Wojciech Szczesny says he "feels something" for Brentford because they put their faith in him last season.

Brentford midfielder Toumani Diagouraga admits he is playing catch up when it comes to finding his best form for the start of the League One campaign.

The 23-year-old completed his switch from Peterborough United last week in putting pen to paper on the three-year deal to keep him at the club until 2013.

Boss Andy Scott had been tracking the French-born star since he was told he didn't feature in Posh boss Gary Johnson's plans, despite impressing at Griffin Park last season.

Diagouraga, who plans to move to west London as soon as possible, was left kicking his heals in the UK when United headed for their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

He was a face in the crowd at Kevin O'Connor's testimonial last week and made his return to Brentford colours in Saturday's 0-0 friendly draw at Tonbridge Angels.

And he admits it is like he has never been away.

"It was a deal I always wanted to happen, especially after I was shown the door by Peterborough," he said.

"I was told on the first day of pre-season training there that I didn't feature in their plans so I haven't really trained since then.

"My aim is to get back, fit and ready for when the season starts and hopefully I can get somewhere near to my form of last year.

"The new signings seem like decent players. I've only been here five days and nothing seems to have changed.

"The same team spirit is there. The lads are still a good bunch and are all still up for it."

SIMON Moore is ready to be challenging for a first team spot, according to Brentford boss Andy Scott.

The young keeper was snapped up last summer, having previously been playing football on the Isle of Wight, after impressing in some pre-season friendlies.

As third choice keeper behind Lewis Price and Nikki Bull, and then fourth choice when Wojciech Szczensy came in on loan Moore was restricted to just one substitute appearance.

But having played in both of Brentford's friendlies against Tonbridge Angels and Wycombe Wanderers this week, Scott feels Moore is ready to wrestle the number one jersey off Richard Lee.

He said: "Simon came on in the last game of last season, and I don't see why he can't be challenging for a first team spot regularly. He has played well when given the chance and looks good in training."
