SUNDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Fri 27 Aug 2010

DANNY Wilson was left frustrated by his team's performance at both ends of the pitch as Town drew 1-1 at home to Brentford yesterday.

David Prutton's header cancelled out a Charlie MacDonald goal to hand Swindon a share of the spoils, but the boss knew it could - and should - have been all three points.

A Michael Rose mistake gifted the Bees their opener after eight minutes, while the hosts lacked the cutting edge to convert a number of good chances created in the second half.

"The performance at times was very good - I'm not disappointed," said Wilson.

"But it's always at those two ends of the pitch that it is the difference, and unfortunately we haven't kept a clean sheet or converted opportunities which we have created.

"All the goals we have conceded so far have been down to an individual decision, and that's what cost us. At the moment in time it seems like we are getting punished for every mistake."

Talking about Brentford's goal, he added: "You've got to make sure you keep your back line nice and tight, and there was no danger quite honestly.

"But unfortunately the decision to head the ball back was poor. It was never going to get there and he (Rose) should have just run the ball out or run it back, and that's cost us.

"Thankfully we got back in the game and really on the overall game and the amount of pressure and opportunities we have had, ours were far greater than Brentford. But we couldn't break them down."

Wilson did, however, pay tribute to recalled defender Sean Morrison, who had an outstanding game at the heart of Town's defence.

The teenager impressed all afternoon, and Wilson said: "He was very, very solid.

"The way that Brentford set themselves up and want to play, we knew it was going to be a real battle in the two centre-back positions.

"I thought Sean came to the party really well. He headed virtually every ball that he competed for, looked solid and strong, linked the play well and did everything we asked of him.

"First and foremost he defended and did that very well. We know what type of player he could be, and with a bit of luck he will start getting confidence from the game."

Swindon travel to Milton Keynes Dons next Saturday where they will hope to pick up their first win of the season, at the fifth time of asking.

"If we had got a win from this one (Brentford) then the confidence would have been sky high," said Wilson.

"But we have to wait a little bit longer."

DAVID Prutton's first goal for Town helped them to a 1-1 draw against Brentford at the County Ground this afternoon.

The midfielder, signed this summer from Colchester, pounced just before half-time to level things up after the Bees had taken a shock lead.

Charlie MacDonald put the visitors in front on eight minutes, capitalising on a Michael Rose error.

And they had chances to increase their advantage as Swindon looked shellshocked.

But Prutton equalised four minutes before the break heading in at the far post after Sean Morrison had flicked on Rose's long throw.

BRENTFORD earned their first point of the season with a hard-fought draw at Swindon.

Charlie MacDonald gave the Bees an early lead, only to see his effort cancelled out before the break by David Prutton.

Swindon started the stronger, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on eight minutes.

Michael Rose failed to clear Leon Legge's long punt upfield, and MacDonald nipped in to squeeze the ball past David Lucas from a tight angle.

Myles Weston and Robbie Simpson went close to doubling the visitors' lead, but it was Swindon who levelled five minutes before the break.

Sean Morrison flicked on Rose's long throw, and Prutton swooped to head home the equaliser.

Weston missed a sitter on the stroke of half-time when he somehow managed to put the ball over the bar from two yards with the goal gaping.

Swindon sub David Ball flashed a header wide as the hosts began the second-half on the front foot, while Morrison almost put Kevin O'Connor's corner through his own net at the other end.

BEES: McCarthy, O'Connor, Osborne, Legge, Woodman, Simpson (Adams 69), Bean , Diagouraga, Weston, MacDonald (Forster 86), Alexander.

Subs not used: Lee, Balkestein, McCracken, Spillane, Hunt.

Prutton rescues Robins David Prutton's first ever goal for Swindon gave the hosts a point from a 1-1 draw with Brentford in a game they did enough to win.

Swindon started the brighter of the two teams but were soon made to pay for their lack of prowess in front of goal when, on eight minutes, a weak header from Michael Rose back to keeper David Lucas was intercepted by Brentford's Charlie MacDonald who then had an easy finish to make it 1-0.

Town then got back into the game, Thomas Dossevi, Jonathan Douglas and Jon-Paul McGovern all having chances and Swindon were rewarded for their patience on 41 minutes when a long throw from Michael Rose was nodded on by Sean Morrison and Prutton stole in at the back post to nod home.

Like in the first, Town started the second half looking the more positive side but failed to make Brentford keeper Alex McCarthy work.

Both teams had their chances, with Swindon turning up the heat the most, only for Charlie Austin and David Ball to waste the opportunities that came their way.

Town took their first home point of the season after drawing 1-1 with Brentford on what was an entertaining afternoon at The County Ground.

The hosts looked much the better side in the opening exchanges, but found themselves behind after eight minutes, when Michael Rose's headed back pass was not powerful enough to reach David Lucas, and the left-back could only watch as Bees striker Charlie McDonald stole in and rolled it under the 'keeper to make it 1-0.

The hosts looked shell shocked, and could have found themselves further adrift on two occasions soon after, as first Myles Weston was denied well by Lucas when one on one with the 'keeper, and then Robbie Simpson looped a header just wide of the far post.

After the frantic five minute period that followed their going behind, Town regained a little composure, and might have equalised through Jonathan Douglas, as the skipper latched onto the loose ball inside the area and hit a deflected volley narrowly wide.

It subsequently became a scrappy affair, with both sides struggling to keep possession for any length of time, and referee Rushton not helping matters with some pedantic decision making.

Town still endeavoured to play the kind of possession football that brought them so much success last season, and while they continued to enjoy the lion's share of the ball, a clear cut chance was not forthcoming.

That was until in the 41st minute, when Michael Rose launched a long throw onto the head of Sean Morrison, who flicked the ball across the box, where David Prutton stole in to head home the equaliser - his first for the club - and breathe new life into The County Ground.

While it was Town who finished the half the stronger, they still could have been going in behind, had Myles Weston not poked over the simplest of chances on the stroke of the break; putting a cross from McDonald narrowly over the bar from six yards out.

The second half begun in much the same vein as had the first, with Town looking the side most comfortable in possession, but still occasionally susceptible to a counter attack.

Douglas, Austin and substitute David Ball all had half chances to put Town ahead within the hour, but they either narrowly missed the target, or found Bees 'keeper Alex McCarthy on good form.

The game then drifted uneventfully into its last 10 minutes, but came alive when Austin and Douglas saw consecutive volleys blocked brilliantly in the box, which signalled the onset of another bout of Town pressure.

However it was the Bees who went close to stealing the win in the 85th minute, when a deep cross from Weston found Gary Alexander unmarked at the back post, but the former Town man could only head into the side netting when he might have done better.

The hosts finished the match on the front foot, with substitutes Ball and Pericard both looking lively and the latter going close with a powerful drive which flew just wide, but a sucker punch was not forthcoming from either side, and both took a point in what was probably a fair reflection of the afternoon.

ANDY Scott wants to get Simon Moore out on loan for the whole season - ideally to a League Two club - after landing Reading keeper Alex McCarthy on loan.

The youngster, who signed for Brentford last summer, had only played about half an hour of first team football before this season.

But following some impressive pre-season displays, he leapfrogged new signing Richard Lee in the line for the number one jersey, and started against Carlisle and Cheltenham.

However, with McCarthy's arrival, Bees boss Scott wants the Reading loanee fighting it out with Lee to be his first choice.

He said: "I have spoken to Simon and I want to get him out on loan for the season, he needs a whole year of first team football.

"We're trying to find him a club at the moment. A lot of teams are only operating with one keeper, so we may have to wait for an injury somewhere.

"We are looking to get him out to perhaps a League Two club, or at least a Conference side."
